Services Delivered

RSS Infrastructure’s Managed Environments Division, specifically the IRATA Rope Access team, successfully executed the Soil Netting Installation Project near the River Gary in Perthshire, Scotland. The project involved the installation of soil netting on a steep railway embankment, stabilising retaining walls, and removing existing gabion baskets. Completed over two intensive 57-hour railway blockades, the project faced challenging weather conditions but was delivered on time with high safety and quality standards.

Key Actions

  • Conducted detailed site planning and risk assessments guided by IRATA ICOP standards and Eurocodes.
  • Mobilised two IRATA-certified teams for continuous 24-hour operations through consecutive day and night shifts.
  • Utilised advanced equipment, including a skid rig, spider excavator, and IRATA-compliant rope access systems.
  • Adopted a phased approach, including soil nailing, grouting, and netting installation.
  • Integrated regular testing protocols to ensure compliance and structural integrity.

Project Delivery

The Soil Netting Installation Project highlighted RSSI’s ability to expertly plan, implement, and deploy specialised teams across the UK, ensuring client success every step of the way. The work was completed under challenging conditions at a steep embankment near the River Gary in Perthshire, Scotland.

Key aspects of the delivery included:

  • Safety and Compliance: Comprehensive risk assessments and the use of certified equipment ensured worker safety and adherence to all regulatory standards.
  • Continuous Operations: Managed through 24-hour shift patterns, the project ensured seamless progress even in tough weather conditions.
  • Technical Proficiency: Soil nailing and grouting tasks were performed to exact quality requirements, enabling a seamless transition to netting installation.
  • Adaptability: Despite freezing temperatures causing frozen ropes and equipment malfunctions, the team implemented quick solutions, such as priming netting for subsequent shifts and resolving equipment issues dynamically.
  • Exceptional Communication: Efficient collaboration between shifts ensured continuity and alignment on progress, maintaining high safety and efficiency standards.

RSSI’s proactive approach to logistics, resource allocation, and problem-solving ensured the project not only met but exceeded client expectations.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Weather Challenges: Extreme cold caused frozen ropes and malfunctioning equipment. The team implemented preventive measures and corrective actions to maintain operations.
  • Equipment Malfunctions: Water pump and grout hose issues were resolved using temporary solutions, avoiding work stoppages.

Added Value

  • Operational Excellence: RSSI maintained full efficiency, addressing unforeseen challenges without delays.
  • Proactive Problem-Solving: Integrated testing protocols and contingency planning minimised disruptions and ensured quality results.
  • Client Satisfaction: Daily feedback commended the team’s professionalism and technical expertise.
