Drone Pad Installation

“This project was vital in providing Network Rail with a dedicated drone unit facility that significantly improves the efficiency of their incident management processes. The collaboration between RSS Infrastructure and Network Rail’s design team allowed us to deliver a solution that meets the highest standards of safety and functionality.

John Byrne, Head of Rail Operations

Services Delivered

RSS Infrastructure’s Rail Operations division was commissioned by Network Rail to construct a state-of-the-art drone pad for the central route to support the incident management teams. The project involved designing and building a specialised 4 x 4-metre drone pad and a secure communication unit for pilots and drone hardware. This new facility was intended to replace a makeshift solution and improve the safety and efficiency of drone operations.

Key Actions

  • Collaborated with Network Rail’s design team to develop a bespoke 4 x 4 metre drone pad.
  • Installed a secure communication unit for drone pilots and equipment.
  • Managed logistics to ensure 24-hour emergency vehicle access for British Transport Police throughout the project.
  • Delivered the project within the allocated 8-week timeline and £50,000 budget.

Project Delivery

Network Rail required a dedicated drone pad to support their incident management teams on the central route. The client had been using a makeshift pad, but they needed a more advanced facility to ensure safe and efficient drone take-offs and landings.

The makeshift drone pad was not meeting the operational needs of Network Rail’s incident management teams. This inadequacy risked compromising the safety and productivity of drone operations, which are essential for rapid incident response.

RSS Infrastructure collaborated with Network Rail’s design team to deliver a purpose-built drone pad. The 4 x 4-metre pad was designed to accommodate advanced drone technology, and a secure communication unit was installed to support drone pilots during operations. The team also had to ensure that the site remained accessible to British Transport Police for emergency vehicle access during the build.

One of the main challenges was the need to maintain uninterrupted 24-hour access for British Transport Police vehicles while constructing the drone pad. The team strategically managed the site to allow for this, ensuring emergency services were not disrupted.

The new facility significantly improves Network Rail’s ability to manage incidents efficiently, offering a safe and purpose-built location for drone take-offs and landings. The project’s timely completion has provided Network Rail with a long-term solution that enhances safety and productivity.
