Newsham Station Platform Construction: A Milestone for the Northumberland Line

On Monday, March 17th, 2025, Newsham Station officially opened to the public as part of the Northumberland Line reintroduction—an important step forward for the local community. RSS Infrastructure (RSSI), on behalf of Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, delivered the platform construction as a key element of the project.

This proud achievement showcases the commitment, creativity, and excellence of our Civils and Construction division. Over 18 months, the team transformed a challenging site into a vital transport link—navigating complex ground conditions and weather impacts with skill and focus. The result is a welcoming, fully accessible station that opens up fresh opportunities for communities and strengthens regional connections.

A Platform Built with Purpose

From the ground up, every element of the station was delivered with long-term use and passenger experience in mind:

  • Groundworks and Excavation: The team addressed high ash content in the soil with enhanced testing and excavation methods, managing environmental responsibilities from day one.
  • Foundations and Structure: Reinforced concrete bases and in-situ pours laid the groundwork for a durable, compliant structure.
  • Pre-Cast Units: The installation of pre-cast platform elements, including tactile and coper units, ensured safety and accessibility.
  • Passenger Experience: Quality paving, kerbs, ramps, steps, and platform furniture were added to ensure a welcoming, user-friendly environment.

Facing Challenges Head-On

Newsham Station presented a real opportunity to showcase the team’s adaptability and problem-solving strengths. From managing drainage during periods of heavy rainfall to executing precise lifts beneath a pre-existing overbridge, the project brought out the best in everyone involved. The team ensured steady progress and a successful outcome with close collaboration between RSSI, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, and other partners and a strong focus on safety.

More Than a Station

The new station will improve access to Newcastle for work, shopping, and leisure, supporting both economic growth and everyday travel needs. It stands as a symbol of how infrastructure can bring people together and support community development.

We’re incredibly proud to have contributed to this significant regional investment and look forward to seeing the positive impact Newsham Station will have in the years ahead.
